Tuesday: The Things We Put Off
DAILY BLOG
My post content
How many times have we said, "I'll do it tomorrow"?
Sometimes, tomorrow comes, and we do exactly what we planned. Other times, tomorrow becomes next week, next month, or sometime when we finally have more time.
We put off making that phone call. We delay organizing the closet. We tell ourselves we'll start that project when things settle down. We might even postpone something we've been wanting to do for ourselves because there always seems to be something else that needs our attention.
And before we know it, time has passed.
Now, I understand that everything can't be done at once. Life happens. Some days, we're tired. Other days, we have so much going on that adding one more thing to the list feels like too much. Sometimes, waiting is necessary because the timing simply isn't right.
But there are also moments when we keep putting things off because we're waiting for the perfect time.
The perfect time to begin. The perfect time to make a change. The perfect time to try something new.
What if that perfect time never comes?
We can spend so much time preparing ourselves to do something that we never actually get around to doing it. We think about it, talk about it, make plans for it, and sometimes even imagine how good it will feel once it's finished.
Then we move on to something else.
I've learned that there is a difference between knowing when to wait and constantly giving yourself another reason to wait. One allows you to prepare. The other can keep you standing in the same place.
Maybe the answer isn't to do everything today. Maybe it's to choose one thing and take a step toward it.
Make the call. Write the first paragraph. Clear that one space. Spend a little time on the idea you've been carrying around.
It doesn't have to be finished in a day. It just has to begin somewhere.
We can't get back the time we've already spent waiting, but we can decide what we do with the time ahead of us.
Something to think about: What's one thing you've been putting off that you could take a small step toward today?
