Tuesday: Background Noise
DAILY BLOG
My post content
Most of us don't notice background noise until it's gone.
The hum of a refrigerator. A train passing in the distance. The ticking of an old clock. The barking dog down the street. The sound of kids playing outside on a summer afternoon.
For years, those sounds become part of life.
Then one day, something changes.
The dog isn't there anymore. The clock finally stops ticking. The neighbor moves away. The train route closes. Suddenly, the silence feels unfamiliar.
It's funny how quickly we adapt to things.
What once seemed distracting becomes comforting. Sounds we barely notice become part of the soundtrack of our lives.
Background noise works that way.
It quietly fills the spaces between moments.
Sometimes it's the sound of family moving around the house. Dishes clinking in the kitchen. Someone watching television in another room. A parent talking on the phone. The everyday noises that tell us we're not alone.
Years later, those ordinary sounds often become memories.
We tend to remember major events, but there's something powerful about remembering the atmosphere of a moment. The sounds. The feeling. The little details that made a place feel like home.
Maybe that's why silence can feel strange.
Not because it's empty, but because it reminds us of what used to fill the space.
Background noise isn't really background at all. It's part of the story.
We just don't realize it while it's happening.
Something to think about: What sound from your past do you wish you could hear one more time?
