Thursday: The Value of Being Comfortable With Yourself

There comes a point when you start to realize that you don't have to enjoy everything other people enjoy.
You don't have to go everywhere everyone else goes, follow every trend, or agree with every opinion. You can like what you like, have your own interests, and decide how you want to spend your time.
It sounds simple, but sometimes it's easier said than done.
We live in a world where we're constantly seeing what other people are doing. Someone is starting a new business, traveling somewhere beautiful, buying something exciting, or reaching a goal they've been working toward. We see the highlights, and sometimes we start comparing our lives to theirs.
We may begin wondering whether we're doing enough or whether we should be doing something differently.
And before long, we're measuring ourselves against people whose circumstances we may know very little about.
There's nothing wrong with being inspired by someone else. Seeing what another person has accomplished can encourage us to explore our own possibilities. We might discover a new interest or realize that something we thought was out of reach is worth pursuing.
The problem comes when inspiration turns into pressure.
We start doing things because we feel we should, rather than because they actually fit our lives. We agree to things we don't want to do because we don't want to disappoint anyone. We may even hide parts of ourselves because we're worried someone won't understand.
That can become exhausting.
Being comfortable with yourself doesn't mean you never change your mind, learn something new, or recognize that you could improve in certain areas. It means you can do those things without feeling like you have to become someone else to be accepted.
You can be a work in progress and still appreciate the person you are today.
You can have goals without being ashamed of where you are right now. You can admire someone else's life without deciding your own is somehow less valuable.
And you can change because you want to, not because you feel pressured to keep up.
I think there's a certain freedom in knowing what works for you and being willing to stand by it. You don't have to explain every preference or justify every decision to everyone you meet.
Sometimes, it's enough to know yourself a little better and make choices that reflect that understanding.
There's plenty of room in the world for people to be different. We don't all have to want the same things or follow the same path.
Something to think about: Is there something you genuinely enjoy that you've learned to appreciate without worrying about what other people think?
