The Thief

My post content
When I first thought about today's title, the obvious thing that came to mind was someone stealing money or possessions. The more I sat with it though, the more I realized that wasn't the first thing a thief takes. At least not in my experience.
The first thing they steal is your trust.
Before anything else ever goes missing, trust is already there. You believed that person respected you. You believed they valued your space, your belongings, your kindness, and your willingness to have them around. Then one day, you find out something is missing, and with it goes the trust you once had.
I've learned that people can steal a lot more than what's sitting on a shelf or inside a wallet. They can steal your time by constantly taking advantage of you. They can steal your energy by creating unnecessary problems. They can steal your patience by repeating the same behavior over and over again. They can even steal your peace of mind because now you're wondering if it will happen again.
That's the part that has always stayed with me.
I don't think I could ever understand taking something that doesn't belong to you. I was taught differently, and I've always believed that if it isn't yours, you simply leave it alone. It may sound simple, but that's how I've always looked at it.
What makes it even harder is when the thief is someone you know. Someone you've welcomed into your life. Someone you've helped or trusted. Finding out it was them leaves you with more than disappointment. It makes you question your judgment. You start wondering if you missed signs along the way or if there was something you should have seen sooner.
The good thing is, experiences teach us. As much as I dislike learning lessons that way, they still teach us. They make us a little wiser, a little more careful, and a little more aware of who we allow into our lives.
Now, I don't believe everyone is out to take from us. There are plenty of good people in this world, and I'm thankful for that. I would rather focus on those individuals than spend my days expecting the worst from everyone I meet.
Still, if there's one thing this topic reminded me of, it's how valuable trust really is. Once it's broken, it takes a long time to rebuild, and sometimes it never returns at all. To me, that's a much bigger loss than anything money could ever replace.
Have you ever had someone take something from you? Maybe it wasn't money. Maybe it was your trust, your time, your patience, or your peace. Whatever it was, I hope you were able to move forward without letting that experience harden your heart.
Just something that crossed my mind today.
Until we meet again.
