Front steps don't seem important.

They're simply a way in and out of the house.

A few pieces of concrete or wood connecting one place to another.

Yet a surprising amount of life happens there.

Kids waiting for friends.

Families saying goodbye before vacations.

Neighbors stopping to talk.

Packages being delivered.

Parents watching children leave for school.

Front steps witness countless arrivals and departures.

Most of them ordinary.

Some of them unforgettable.

Life often happens in transition.

Not just in the destinations.

The spaces in between matter too.

The moments before a first day.

The moments after good news.

The moments when someone leaves.

The moments when someone returns.

We don't usually recognize their significance while they're happening.

Only later.

Only when we look back.

That's true of many parts of life.

The ordinary places often hold the most meaningful memories.

Not because they were extraordinary.

Because they were present during extraordinary moments.

Front steps understand that.

They quietly stay in place while the story unfolds around them.

Something to think about: What doorway in your life holds the most memories for you?
