Saturday: Taking the Long Way

Sometimes, taking the long way is the best part of the trip.
I'm talking about those moments when you have somewhere to go, but instead of heading straight there, you decide to take another route. Maybe you drive through a neighborhood you haven't seen before, notice a new business, or discover a little place you might want to visit later.
You weren't necessarily looking for anything. You just happened to notice it along the way.
We can get so focused on reaching our destination that we forget there's a whole journey happening between where we start and where we're going.
Think about how often we rush through the day. We're watching the clock, checking the time, thinking about the next appointment, and making sure we arrive when we're supposed to. There's a reason for that, of course. We have responsibilities, and being on time matters.
But not every moment has to be rushed.
Sometimes, it's nice to give ourselves a little room to explore, provided we have the time and can do so safely.
The same idea applies to life in general.
We often have a picture of how things are supposed to happen. We set goals, make plans, and decide what our progress should look like. When things don't follow that plan, we can feel as though we're falling behind.
But what if the longer route teaches us something we wouldn't have learned otherwise?
Maybe a delay gives us time to reconsider a decision. Perhaps an unexpected opportunity introduces us to a different interest. Or maybe we discover that the thing we thought we wanted isn't quite what we imagined.
That doesn't mean every detour is wonderful. Some are frustrating, expensive, or disappointing. There are times when we simply want to get where we're going and be done with it.
Still, a detour doesn't automatically mean we've failed to reach our destination.
Sometimes, we're learning as we go. Sometimes, we're discovering what works for us. And sometimes, we're just taking a different path.
I think it's worth remembering that not everything meaningful has to happen according to a schedule.
We can have a destination in mind and still appreciate what we encounter along the way.
Something to think about: Have you ever taken an unexpected detour that turned out to be a good experience?
