Saturday: Dusty Shelves

Dust usually gathers on the things we have not touched in a while.

Sometimes it is an old book, a framed photograph, a box of keepsakes, or something we meant to fix but never did. Other times, the dust settles on a hobby we once loved, a goal we stopped pursuing, or a part of ourselves we have not visited in years.

Nearly everyone has a dusty shelf somewhere.

It might be in a closet, garage, basement, or spare room. It holds the things we were not ready to throw away but did not know what to do with either.

There may be books we planned to read, supplies for a hobby we hoped to restart, old electronics, awards, family photographs, and items that once seemed important enough to save.

Every so often, we decide to clean the shelf.

That simple task can quickly turn into a trip through the past. You find something you forgot you owned, sit down to look at it, and suddenly the cleaning comes to a complete stop.

An old photograph brings back a memory. A book contains a note someone wrote years ago. A small object reminds you of a place you once visited or a person you used to know.

Dusty shelves are not only found in our homes.

We have them in our minds too. They hold ideas we set aside because life became busy. They hold talents we stopped using and dreams we quietly decided were no longer practical.

Maybe you once painted, wrote poetry, planted flowers, played an instrument, or spent weekends working on old cars. Then responsibilities took over, and the things you enjoyed were pushed farther and farther back.

Eventually, they gathered dust.

Not everything on a dusty shelf needs to be saved. Some things have served their purpose and can be released. Keeping every item does not preserve every memory, and letting something go does not erase the meaning it once had.

But sometimes we uncover something worth returning to.

Maybe the old camera still works. Perhaps the unfinished book still interests you. That hobby might still bring you joy if you give it another chance.

Cleaning a shelf can be about more than removing dust. It can help us decide what still belongs in our lives.

Some things should be remembered. Some should be released. And some are simply waiting to be picked up again.

Something to think about: What have you placed on a dusty shelf that may deserve another chance?
