Inhale and Exhale

Inhale and exhale.
Simple enough, right?
Well, before I could do anything else today, I needed to catch my breath.
But first, I had to make sure I inhaled.
Then exhaled.
Light or heavy, breathing is something we do without much thought. It is constant. It is automatic. It keeps us moving whether we're paying attention to it or not.
Yet every now and then, life has a way of reminding us just how important it is.
Some days take you through so much that before you know it, you're waist-deep in a situation that has consumed far more time than you ever planned for.
You start the day with a schedule.
A plan.
A list of things you intend to accomplish.
Everything seems reasonable.
Everything appears manageable.
And then life decides to make a few adjustments.
For example, someone asks you to call them back.
No problem.
You figure it will take ten minutes.
Maybe fifteen.
A quick conversation and then you're back to your day.
Sounds simple enough.
Except it doesn't always work that way.
Before you know it, ten minutes becomes thirty.
Thirty becomes forty-five.
And somehow an entire hour has disappeared.
Now the things you intended to do afterward are still sitting there waiting for your attention.
Two more tasks.
Two more responsibilities.
Two more things that mattered.
Only now there isn't enough time left in the day.
So what happens?
You push them to tomorrow.
Not because you wanted to.
Not because you planned to.
But because that's reality.
The funny thing is, situations like this happen more often than we'd like to admit.
Life rarely sticks to the schedule we create for it.
People need things.
Unexpected events happen.
Conversations run long.
Traffic appears.
Plans change.
And suddenly we're trying to rearrange an entire day around something we never saw coming.
That's when frustration usually arrives.
That's when we start replaying everything in our heads.
That's when we wonder how things got off track in the first place.
But honestly, what good does that do?
If the situation was outside of your control, then what exactly are you punishing yourself for?
You couldn't predict it.
You couldn't prevent it.
You simply responded to what was in front of you.
And sometimes that's all any of us can do.
Which brings me back to today's title.
Inhale and exhale.
Because when life starts moving in directions we didn't plan for, that's often the best response available.
Not panic.
Not frustration.
Not stressing ourselves into exhaustion.
Just breathe.
Take a moment.
Regroup.
Accept what happened.
Adjust where necessary.
And continue moving forward.
I think we spend so much time trying to control outcomes that we forget some things were never ours to control in the first place.
We can control our effort.
We can control our attitude.
We can control how we respond.
Beyond that, life tends to do what life does.
The older I get, the more I appreciate that truth.
Not every delay is a disaster.
Not every change in plans is a problem.
And not every unfinished task needs to become a source of stress.
Sometimes tomorrow is simply another opportunity.
Another chance.
Another page waiting to be written.
So if your day didn't go exactly as planned, that's okay.
If your schedule got rearranged, that's okay.
If you have to pick something back up tomorrow, that's okay too.
The world didn't end.
The opportunity didn't disappear.
The task will still be there.
In the meantime, take a breath.
Inhale.
Exhale.
And remind yourself that not everything requires a reaction.
Sometimes peace is the better option.
As for me, I'll tackle tomorrow when tomorrow arrives.
Today, I'm choosing to breathe.
And honestly, that feels like enough.
