Individualist

I don't know that I ever chose to be an individualist. If I'm being honest, I think life chose that path for me. For as long as I can remember, I've often felt like I was looking at the world from a different place than everyone else. Not because I believed I was better than anyone or because I was trying to stand out. I simply saw things differently, thought differently, and approached life in my own way. Somewhere along the journey, I realized that not everyone understood that, and sometimes people made me feel as though being different was somehow a problem that needed to be fixed.

There have been moments when I could almost feel people looking at me as though I didn't quite fit. Maybe they thought I was strange. Maybe they thought I was lost. Maybe they simply saw me as someone taking up space. I don't know what was going through their minds, but I certainly knew what was going through mine. I questioned myself more than once. I wondered if I was supposed to think differently, act differently, or become more like everyone else. It almost felt as though the only way to be accepted was to become someone I wasn't.

As I got older, however, I began to understand something that completely changed my perspective. If I had spent my life trying to meet everyone else's expectations, I would have eventually lost myself. I would have become a version of me that everyone else was comfortable with while quietly becoming uncomfortable with myself. That realization was enough to make me stop chasing approval. I decided I would rather spend my time discovering who I truly was than exhausting myself trying to become who everyone else wanted me to be.

I know I'm different, and today I'm perfectly comfortable admitting that. I don't wake up trying to be unique or hoping people notice me. I simply believe we're all created differently for a reason. We each have our own personalities, experiences, perspectives, and ways of seeing the world. Mine just happens to be a little different from what some people expect, and I'm finally okay with that. Being different doesn't automatically make someone wrong. Sometimes it simply means they're willing to think beyond what everyone else accepts without question.

That doesn't mean there haven't been difficult moments. There have been plenty of times when I felt misunderstood or when I realized I was the only person in the room looking at a situation from a completely different perspective. There have also been moments when I felt judged before people even took the time to know me. Those experiences used to bother me much more than they do today. Now I've learned that not everyone is meant to understand me, and that's perfectly alright. The people who truly belong in my life won't require me to change who I am just so they can feel more comfortable around me.

One of the greatest lessons I've learned is that acceptance begins within. Once I stopped looking for everyone else's approval, I found a peace I didn't know I was missing. I no longer feel the need to explain every decision I make or defend every part of my personality. I simply allow people to take me as I am. If they appreciate me, I'm grateful. If they don't, I sincerely wish them well and continue moving forward. Life has become much lighter that way.

So yes, I suppose I am an individualist. Not because I chose to be different, but because I refused to lose myself trying to fit into places that were never designed for me. I have learned that standing alone with peace is far better than fitting in while pretending. If being the odd one out means I remain true to who I am, then I can honestly say I'm perfectly fine with that. At the end of the day, I'd much rather be remembered for being genuine than accepted for being someone I was never meant to become.

Shall we see each other again Thursday....
