Head Down, Phone Up

Head down, phone up.
Yesterday, I had an appointment to attend.
As I made my way there, I found myself doing something I enjoy every now and then.
People watching.
When you're driving around town, you really do see all kinds of people.
The person in the car beside you.
The driver in front of you.
The one checking their mirrors behind you.
People waiting at the bus stop.
Someone walking down the sidewalk.
Customers coming in and out of businesses.
Someone waiting to turn onto the street.
The list just keeps going.
There are people everywhere.
And every single one of them has their own story.
As I was driving, one person caught my attention.
It was a gentleman walking down the sidewalk.
His head was down.
His phone was up.
It immediately made me smile because I thought to myself...
Head Down, Phone Up.
That could easily be today's title.
Then my mind wandered back a few years.
I remember when I depended on public transportation.
There were also times when I simply walked because my destination was close enough.
Back then, I was out and about without a phone glued to my hand.
Matter of fact, there were plenty of days when I didn't even have one with me.
How different things are now.
Somewhere along the way, our phones became part of us.
They're almost attached to our hips.
They're the first thing many people pick up in the morning and the last thing they put down at night.
And when we're walking...
There it is again.
Head down.
Phone up.
It's amazing how such a small device has become such a large part of everyday life.
Think about it for a moment.
The blue light shining directly into our eyes.
Our neck bent forward.
Our shoulders leaning in.
The phone lifted just enough to meet our gaze.
When you step back and observe it from a distance, it almost looks like a posture we've all unknowingly learned together.
Seeing it through someone else's actions made me notice it even more.
Sometimes that's all it takes.
Watching another person can make you aware of habits you've developed yourself.
Now don't get me wrong.
I'm thankful for technology.
Our phones help us stay connected.
They help us navigate.
We learn from them.
Work from them.
Capture memories with them.
There's no denying how useful they are.
But I also believe it's healthy to know when to put them down.
Personally, I try to limit how much time I spend on my phone.
And when I do use it, I try to keep my head up and hold it at an angle that's a little easier on my neck.
It's a small adjustment, but it makes a difference.
Besides...
There's a whole world happening around us.
People smiling.
Children playing.
Clouds moving across the sky.
Conversations taking place.
Little moments we might miss if we're always looking down.
The next time you're out and about, take a quick look around.
You might notice someone walking with their...
Head down.
Phone up.
Or...
You might realize that someone is quietly watching you.
Either way, it made for an interesting observation.
Just another reminder of how much the times have changed.
As they say...
You do you.
Happy Saturday!
I hope you have a wonderful rest of your day.
And until tomorrow...
