Give me a chance.

Now that's a statement we've probably all heard at one point or another.

Maybe we've even been the ones saying it.

As I thought about today's title, my mind immediately went in two different directions.

The first thought was simple.

How many times have I heard someone say,

"Just give me a chance."

Then almost immediately, another thought followed.

How many times wasn't I given a chance?

That one made me pause for a moment.

Life has a funny way of presenting us with opportunities.

Sometimes we're the ones asking for them.

Other times, we're the ones deciding whether someone else deserves one.

A chance can be given in an instant.

But once that chance is handed over, the outcome often rests in the hands of the person receiving it.

That's the interesting part.

Not everyone is willing...

Even when they're able.

I've wondered why that is.

Maybe it comes down to desire.

Maybe it comes down to effort.

Maybe it simply comes down to whether someone truly values the opportunity they've been given.

Then there are the moments when you're the one making the decision.

You're standing there with the opportunity to give someone another chance.

And something inside you quietly asks,

"Should I?"

That's not always an easy question to answer.

Especially when the person standing in front of you has shown you exactly who they are.

The one who rarely follows through.

The one who always needs something.

The one who promises they'll do better this time.

Yet somehow, "this time" always ends up looking just like the last time.

Those moments make you think.

Not because you've stopped caring.

But because experience has become one of your greatest teachers.

As I sat with that thought, another idea came to mind.

People can sometimes be viewed as assets or liabilities.

Now that's a deep statement.

It made me stop for a second.

Think about it.

How many people in your life genuinely add value?

How many encourage you?

Support you?

Challenge you to become better?

Celebrate your victories without competing with them?

Those people are priceless.

Then there are others.

The ones who continually take without giving.

The ones who leave you emotionally drained every time you interact with them.

The ones who only seem to appear when they need something.

The relationship always feels one-sided.

Now that's something worth thinking about.

I don't say that to judge anyone.

I say it because I've learned that not every chance should be given simply because someone asks for it.

Sometimes wisdom tells us to pause.

To observe.

To remember.

I've come to understand that while everyone may deserve kindness, not everyone deserves unlimited chances.

There is a difference.

Some people genuinely need someone to believe in them.

Some simply need one opportunity to prove themselves.

Those are the people I enjoy taking a chance on.

They're willing.

They're appreciative.

They're trying.

Those efforts matter.

Of course, there are no guarantees.

Life doesn't hand us a list separating the dependable from the unreliable.

Sometimes it really does feel like rolling a pair of dice.

You don't always know what you're going to get.

That's why character becomes so important.

Actions have a way of revealing what words sometimes hide.

I've learned to pay closer attention to consistency than promises.

Promises sound good.

Consistency builds trust.

So if today's reflection leaves me with one lesson, it's this:

Give chances where they're deserved.

Protect your peace where they're not.

Believe in people who believe in themselves.

And don't feel guilty for recognizing the difference.

Because not every opportunity is meant for everyone.

And not every person is meant to continue having access to your time, your energy, or your heart.
