Friday: Paper Calendars

There is something satisfying about a paper calendar.

The blank squares.

The handwritten notes.

The birthdays circled months in advance.

The crossed-out days that never come back.

A calendar begins each year full of possibility.

Twelve clean pages.

Countless plans.

Plenty of time.

Then slowly, the spaces begin to fill.

Appointments.

Vacations.

Celebrations.

Responsibilities.

Before long, another page has passed.

Then another.

It's a simple reminder of how time works.

Every day feels ordinary while we're living it.

Yet those ordinary days eventually become years.

The older we get, the faster it seems to happen.

Maybe that's because we stop measuring time in months and begin measuring it in memories.

A wedding.

A graduation.

A move.

A new job.

A growing family.

A calendar tracks the days.

But our memories track the moments.

That's why a filled calendar often means a life that's being lived.

Messy schedules and crossed-out plans included.

Something to think about: If you could save one month from your past and experience it again, which month would you choose?
