Everybody Doesn't Need Access to You

The older I get, the more I realize that access is a privilege, not a right.

Some people think that just because they know your name, sit next to you, work with you, or see you every day, they're entitled to every detail of your life. They're not.

I have noticed there are people who always seem to be fishing for information. They want to know where you're going. They want to know what you're doing. They want to know who you're talking to. They want to know why you're taking a day off. They want to know what you're eating for lunch.

Why?

I've never understood the obsession some people have with being in everyone else's business.

Not everything requires an explanation.

Not everything deserves a response.

And not everyone deserves access.

I used to think I had to answer every question someone asked me. Then I realized there is nothing rude about privacy.

What's rude is thinking people owe you information simply because you're curious.

Some of us are naturally open people. We like talking and sharing. That's fine. But even open people need boundaries.

The truth is, everyone you work with is not your friend.

Everyone you smile at is not in your corner.

Everyone who asks questions isn't asking because they care.

Some people ask because they're nosy.

Some ask because they enjoy gossip.

Some ask because information is currency to them.

That's why I've learned to become comfortable with simple answers.

"Nothing much."

"I'm taking care of a few things."

"Everything's good."

Those answers are complete sentences.

You don't have to provide a detailed PowerPoint presentation every time someone asks a question.

Protecting your peace sometimes means protecting your information.

And if that bothers people, that's their problem, not yours.

At the end of the day, everybody doesn't need access to you.

And that's perfectly okay.
