Do You Remember Me

Do you remember me?

That's an interesting question when you really stop and think about it.

Sometimes I think I remember exactly what I want to remember.

And the things I don't...

I simply push them aside and keep moving forward.

Or maybe...

Sometimes I truly don't remember at all.

Then again, there are moments when someone thinks they know you, and they've actually mistaken you for someone else.

I'm sure that happens more often than we realize.

I was chitchatting yesterday evening, and somewhere during the conversation, today's title popped into my mind.

Do You Remember Me?

Immediately, I thought back to something that happened years ago.

At the time, I was still taking my paycheck into the bank to cash it.

I wasn't interested in direct deposit back then.

Matter of fact, I didn't really care for bank cards either.

Truthfully...

I still think I'd rather carry cash than plastic.

There was just something about walking into the bank that I preferred.

One day, I stepped up to the counter, and the teller greeted me with the biggest smile.

She started talking to me like we already knew each other.

Like we'd just seen one another a few weeks before.

Meanwhile...

I'm standing there wondering...

"How do I know her?"

I studied her face.

I searched my memory.

I tried to connect the dots.

Nothing.

Absolutely nothing.

I was completely clueless.

She continued talking as if we had known each other for years.

The more she talked, the harder I tried to remember.

I couldn't place her.

Not even a little.

Moments like that make you wonder.

If someone genuinely remembers you...

Why don't you remember them?

Was it just a brief encounter?

Did they remember something about you that made the interaction meaningful?

Or maybe...

Was I simply having one of those forgetful moments we all experience from time to time?

Then something interesting happened today.

The exact opposite.

I was scrolling through Instagram when I came across a video.

The gentleman in the video looked so familiar.

I couldn't quite place him, but something about his face kept telling me...

"You know him."

Now, every once in a while, I can be a little bold.

So I sent him a direct message.

I introduced myself and explained why I was reaching out.

He replied.

He confirmed that it was indeed him.

Then he asked if I could send him a picture.

I did.

A few moments later...

He remembered exactly who I was.

I smiled.

Those are the kinds of moments you appreciate.

Not because someone remembered your name.

But because it reminds you that your presence meant something.

That at some point, your paths crossed in a way that stayed with them.

That's a pretty good feeling.

Of course, there are other times when people don't remember us at all.

And that's okay too.

It doesn't always mean the interaction wasn't meaningful.

Life gets busy.

People meet hundreds, even thousands, of faces throughout the years.

Sometimes it's simply impossible to remember everyone.

Maybe their mind was somewhere else.

Maybe their heart was carrying something heavy.

Maybe life had them focused on a completely different chapter.

We never really know.

What I do know is this...

Whether someone remembers us or not doesn't determine our value.

We exist.

We matter.

And every now and then, we'll leave an impression on someone without ever realizing it.

Just as others quietly leave an impression on us.

That's one of the beautiful parts of life.

Our stories overlap.

Sometimes for only a moment.

Sometimes for years.

But every connection has the potential to mean something.

So the next time someone says,

"Do you remember me?"

Take a moment.

You never know what memories might come rushing back.

May your Monday be good to you.

I hope it brings a smile, a good conversation, and maybe even a familiar face you haven't seen in years.

Until next time...
