All You Have To Do Is Ask

All you have to do is ask.
If it were truly that easy, would it even be a question?
Better yet, would we spend so much time thinking about whether we should ask in the first place?
I've heard that phrase many times throughout my life.
"All you have to do is ask."
Simple enough.
At least it sounds simple.
Yet sometimes asking feels like one of the hardest things we can do.
I've asked before.
And if I'm being honest, there have been times when my question felt like a letter mailed to the wrong address.
Returned to sender.
No response.
No explanation.
No acknowledgment that it was ever received.
Just silence.
And silence has a funny way of making us question things.
Maybe it was the way I asked.
Maybe I asked the wrong person.
Maybe they heard the words but never really listened to what I was trying to say.
That happens too.
Sometimes people hear the question but respond to something completely different.
You ask for understanding.
They give advice.
You ask for help.
They give criticism.
You ask for clarity.
They create more confusion.
And suddenly you're standing there wondering if you should have asked at all.
The funny thing is, I think most of us ask because we're seeking something.
Knowledge.
Confirmation.
Guidance.
Reassurance.
Connection.
Sometimes the question is simple.
Sometimes it's complex.
But underneath it all, there is usually a reason.
There is something we're trying to understand.
As I sat thinking about this today, I couldn't help but relate it to writing.
If I asked all of you how you enjoy my written work, what would happen?
Would there be an immediate response?
Would there be no response at all?
Would people read the question and keep scrolling?
I honestly don't know.
And maybe that's part of the challenge.
When we ask, we open ourselves up to possibility.
But we also open ourselves up to uncertainty.
The answer may not come.
The answer may not be what we expected.
Or the answer may reveal something we weren't prepared to hear.
Now that's a thought.
Because sometimes the answers we receive can be painful.
You ask a question hoping for comfort and receive disappointment.
You ask for honesty and receive a truth that hurts.
You ask for clarity and discover something you wish you never knew.
At that point, you begin wondering if ignorance was the better option.
But was it?
I don't know.
Perhaps knowing is still better than wondering forever.
At least knowing gives us somewhere to go.
Wondering can leave us standing in the same place for years.
The more I think about it, the more I realize that asking requires courage.
Not because the question itself is difficult.
But because we have no control over the response.
We can choose the words.
We can choose the timing.
We can choose the person.
But we cannot choose what comes back.
And that's the risk.
The reward is that sometimes the answer changes everything.
Sometimes someone gives us exactly what we needed to hear.
Sometimes a question opens a door that was previously closed.
Sometimes asking creates a conversation that never would have happened otherwise.
And sometimes it simply reminds us that we're not meant to figure everything out on our own.
Maybe that's why we continue asking despite the uncertainty.
Because every now and then, the answer is worth it.
As I close today's thoughts, I find myself wondering how many opportunities begin with a question.
How many friendships?
How many relationships?
How many careers?
How many dreams?
How many second chances?
All because someone found the courage to ask.
So perhaps the phrase isn't entirely wrong.
Maybe all you have to do is ask.
Just understand that the answer may take you somewhere you never expected.
And perhaps that's where the real journey begins.
Until next time, keep asking.
You never know what answer might be waiting for you.
